North Florida Stands Against Seismic Testing and Offshore Drilling Demonstration

Seismic Airgun Testing Comes to Our Coast!

Say NO to Offshore Drilling October 22 in St. Augustine

Matanzas Riverkeeper, along with Friends of Matanzas, Florida Wildlife Federation, South Anastasia Community Association, Environmental Youth Council of St. Augustine, Oceana, Surfrider Foundation, and others have opposed seismic testing because of its destructive impacts on marine mammals, including endangered Right Whales, and coastal communities. We are joined in our opposition locally, by St. Johns County, the City of St. Augustine, and St. Augustine Beach.

Seismic testing will cause catastrophic impacts to marine ecosystems, including injury or death to hundreds of thousands of whales and dolphins. Seismic is a precursor to oil and gas exploration off our coast–a dirty and dangerous practice that threatens the health of the Atlantic, the Matanzas River, and the economies of our coastal communities.

Last July, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), with the Obama administration’s acceptance, approved seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean. We have discovered that 5 permit applications have been filed with BOEM to conduct seismic testing off Florida’s east coast, including St. Augustine.

Seismic testing is no longer a possibility it is a fact. Our community must work to stop seismic testing and subsequent offshore drilling from destroying our tourism, fisheries, economies, and the harming the marine creatures with whom we share the Atlantic Ocean and Matanzas River.

Join us next Wednesday, October 22, at 5:00 PM on the riverfront near the Castillo to demonstrate that St. Augustine, and the Beaches Communities, oppose seismic testing and offshore drilling. We have plans to make seismic testing and offshore drilling an election issue in the governor and attorney general races. We will discuss this effort at the gathering . Voters deserve to know candidates’ positions on offshore drilling before the November 4th election.

Planning for the event is underway, and information will be shared as we progress. To stay abreast, follow Matanzas Riverkeeper on Facebook and/or go to Matanzasriverkeeper.org. Or, email me at neil@matanzasriverkeeper.org.

Add your voice to ours–NO Seismic Testing, NO Rigs in Our Ocean!
